Geriatric Competencies
Geriatric competencies exist for medicine (Williams et al., 2010), nursing (Kennedy-Malone et al., 2006), psychology (Knight et al., 2009), social work (Naito-Chan et al., 2004), physical therapy (Wong et al., 2011) and multidisciplinary professionals (Partnership for Health in Aging, 2010), along with competencies for interprofessional practice applying to older adult teams (IPEC, 2011). Competencies have also been proposed for dementia care across professionals (Tsaroucha et al, 2013). Consistent with these competencies and focused on managing MCC, Darer and colleagues (2004) identified basic competencies for physicians in managing chronic conditions in later life that apply to all disciplines at varying levels.
These MCC competencies will be addressed in the CATCH-ON modules to assure that all learners receive training supporting mastery of geriatric competencies for managing MCC.
